Guidelines for Teaching Buyouts
A regular, full-time faculty member with an average teaching load of N courses per academic year may buy out of teaching (while continuing to be present on campus and to advise students and do committee work and other service) by providing from grant funds a fraction f = 80%/N of his/her academic year salary for each course reduction in teaching load. In cases of NIH funding, the fraction f will be applied to the NIH salary cap for nine months. All teaching buyouts require the approval of the department and the Dean.
These are guidelines—specific cases can be discussed with either the GRS Associate Dean for grant-funded buyouts, or with the Associate Dean for Faculty for partial leaves and other reductions in teaching load.
