How can we work together to promote better cultural understanding worldwide?

Qais Akbar Omar (GRS’16), a graduate student in the Creative Writing Program, has published a much-praised memoir, A Fort of Nine Towers: An Afghan Family Story. He recalls how the violence and tumult of civil war jolted his family, who, despite losing relatives, their home, and possessions, continued to nurture his wish to attend a university.

Susan K. Jackson

Associate Professor of French and Senior Associate Dean

Susan Jackson is senior associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and associate professor of French in the Department of Romance Studies. Dean Jackson specializes in the literature of the Enlightenment. She is the author of Rousseau’s Occasional Autobiographies as well as articles on Diderot, Laclos, Staël, Voltaire, and Isabelle de Charrière. She teaches courses on the novel, autobiography, the philosophes, eighteenth-century theater, and letter-writing from Ovid to the present. Her primary responsibility within the Dean’s office is for academic policy, curriculum, and teaching. She earned a B.A. from Wellesley College, an M.A. from Middlebury College, and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University.
