From David Copperfield to Midnight Cowboy: Novels and Films about Coming of Age

Lecture by Professor Julia Brown. Part of the alumni lecture series Arts, Culture & Ideas. The 19th century Bildungsroman, or coming-of-age novel, experienced an afterlife in 20th century film. In this talk Professor Brown will discuss her research into the literary resonances of the award-winning film by director John Schlesinger, Midnight Cowboy (1969). Adapted from a novel by James Leo Herlihy, the film resonates with the concerns of the 19th century Bildungsroman. A light lunch will be served.
