Arts & Sciences Establishes Howard Zinn Fund

February 8, 2010

The late Howard Zinn will be memorialized at Boston University by the Howard Zinn Graduate Fund for Studies of Democracy, announced this month by Arts & Sciences Dean Virginia Sapiro. The fund will support graduate students in the University’s political science Ph.D. program working on any aspect of democracy, democratic politics, democratization, or threats to democracy.

“This fund honors Howard Zinn’s years of service as a teacher and mentor at BU, and the way he inspired generations of people to learn about and think differently about politics,” says Dean Sapiro. “Since his death, there has been a most amazing outpouring from alumni, faculty, writers, and beyond—across the political spectrum.”

Howard Zinn, an iconic author, political science professor, and political activist, whose writings changed the lives and minds of BU students and readers around the world, died of a heart attack on January 27 in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 87.
