Impactx2 Content

How can we work together to promote better cultural understanding worldwide?

Qais Akbar Omar (GRS’16), a graduate student in the Creative Writing Program, has published a much-praised memoir, A Fort of Nine Towers: An Afghan Family Story. He recalls how the violence and tumult of civil war jolted his family, who, despite losing relatives, their home, and possessions, continued to nurture his wish to attend a university.

With your help, students like Qais gain the skills they need to tell their story and give us a broader understanding of the world.

New Junior Scholar Leave Policy

Dear CAS Chairs and Directors,

This is in follow-up to Dean Sapiro’s prior messages about the University’s new Junior Scholar Leave policy.

In future years, applications for Junior Scholar Leave should be submitted on the same schedule as all other requests for academic leave or sabbatical — that is, in the Fall semester before the year in which the leave/sabbatical will be taken.

However, given that the announcement of the new Junior Scholar Leave took place just last week, eligible faculty considering a leave for the 2013-2014 academic year should submit their requests as rapidly as possible, and ideally no later than May 1, 2013.

The required documentation is identical to that for other forms of academic leave/sabbatical:

1. Academic Leave of Absence/Sabbatical Faculty Request Form (available at

http://www.bu.edu/provost/files/2012/02/nleave_request_Feb11.pdf);

2. A detailed description of proposed leave/sabbatical plans (one-two pages);

3. Academic Leave of Absence/Sabbatical Department Chair’s Evaluation (available at

http://www.bu.edu/provost/files/2012/02/nleave_chair_eval.pdf);

4. CV, not more than three months old.

The Chair’s evaluation should address how the requested leave “is likely to strengthen the candidate’s overall application for tenure at Boston University,” in line with the policy on Junior Scholar Leave.

The full details of the Junior Scholar Leave are online in the BU Faculty Handbook:

Regards,

Gareth
