How can we work together to promote better cultural understanding worldwide?

Qais Akbar Omar (GRS’16), a graduate student in the Creative Writing Program, has published a much-praised memoir, A Fort of Nine Towers: An Afghan Family Story. He recalls how the violence and tumult of civil war jolted his family, who, despite losing relatives, their home, and possessions, continued to nurture his wish to attend a university.

Guggenheim Foundation Honors McCann, Winn with Fellowships

April 13th, 2012

The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation honored two CAS professors this month with coveted fellowships for their outstanding achievements. Professor of History James McCann, the director ad interim of the Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Term Future, will use the fellowship to complete a book-length work on malaria from both a human and scientific point of view (read more about his project here). Professor of English and Director of the Humanities Foundation James Winn will use his Guggenheim fellowship to complete his study of politics and culture in the life and reign of Queen Anne (read more about his project here).
