Which Test To Take
Different programs will require different standardized admissions tests. You should familiarize yourself with the kinds of tests generally required by the types of schools to which you will be applying, and bookmark their websites. (See below.)
When To Take The Tests
Time-frames can be tight, and not all tests will be offered frequently in your area. Find out how long scores will be valid for the particular tests you need, and find out if you can choose whether or not to report results from previous tests. You might decide to take standardized tests now, even if you will not be applying to grad schools for a while.
As soon as you have decided to begin the application process, start making your testing plans. In considering time-frames, ask yourself whether you will want to take a test-preparation course, and plan the times accordingly.
Test Preparation
If you choose to, you can do additional studying or preparation for these tests. If you want to work on your own, there are study-guides available in book-form that provide sample questions and tips for preparation and test-taking. If you would prefer a formal test preparation program, there are several well-known companies that provide this service. In making your decision, consider your level of confidence, academic preparedness, ability to study on your own, finances, and the competitiveness of the schools to which you will be applying. Speak with friends or acquaintances who have taken the exams and/or have experience with test preparation services.
Registering For Tests
Information will be available on the websites for test dates, locations, registration procedures, and fees. Familiarize yourself with the process for the particular tests you will need to take, and leave yourself plenty of time. Make sure you know which test(s) you will need for each of your applications.
