The Office of Career Services sees students from every BU school and college. Our clients include undergraduates from Freshman through Senior year, Alumni both recent and not-so-recent, and Graduate Students at all levels. Students approach us with a variety of questions. Some of the most common revolve around the connection between their major and a future career:
- I love my major, but what kind of job can I possibly get with it?
- I want to go into the field of ____. What should I major in?
- What should I major in so that I can be sure to get a good job when I graduate?
- I was going to be a _____ major, but the job market has dried up for that.
The answers to these questions can be complex, involving helping the students to understand their own motivations, likes and dislikes, strengths and skills.
Many times the answer also involves helping them to get basic information about a particular major, or about associated career fields. (One of the big surprises many students get is when we tell them that in fact, for many fields, what they major in doesn't matter; many employers seek out Liberal Arts graduates who have demonstrated a passion for a subject and the willingness and ability to learn.)
Each year our office publishes a listing of Seniors who are willing to talk with Freshmen and Sophomores about their majors (SeniorNet.) If you have a student who you think would be a valuable addition to this list, we appreciate your referral.
Another common reason for students to use Career Services is to find a job or an internship. Each year we sponsor Career and Internship Fairs, as well as a Graduate School Admissions Fair in the fall. Our web site will always contain information on our upcoming events.
We also have extensive job postings in our Career Library, and an on-line recruiting system through which students can apply for jobs and schedule on-campus interviews. Please feel free to refer employers to us; we are always happy to learn of new opportunities for students.
If you are approached by a student who is seeking help in one of these areas, please feel free to use us; refer the student to us, or give us a call if you like. We welcome your involvement.
If you would be interested in having a staff member come to your classroom
for a presentation, or if you would like to meet with a staff member
directly, please call our office at 617-353-3590 and we will be glad
