One of the best ways to learn about careers, explore different options,
and discover more about yourself is through direct experience in a
workplace. Opportunities can present themselves in the form of internships,
job shadowing, volunteering, part-time jobs, or even temporary employment
after graduation.
Sometimes students come back and tell us that they discovered a whole aspect of a career that they didn’t know existed; others tell us that the experience confirmed for them that this is what they’d really like to pursue; and some students say that the most important thing they learned was that they don’t want this career. While the latter might sound like the internship was a disappointment, think of how valuable this knowledge can be; it’s certainly better than spending four years in preparation and only then finding out you don’t like your choice!
