Unilateral Economic Sanctions in Transatlantic Relations

Join the Pardee School Project on the Political Economy of Security for its first summer 2018 event: Unilateral Economic Sanctions in Transatlantic Relations by Sascha Lohmann. Sascha Lohmann is a Fritz Thyssen Fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, Harvard University. In the talk he looks at the history of trans- Atlantic relations between Washington and its European allies, revealing changing patterns of cooperation and conflict when it comes to the use of international sanctions. Given the dearth of research on the causes and consequences of previous conflicts about the use of unilateral economic sanctions against state and non-state actors on boith sides of the Atlantic, and taking into account the unfolding strategic divergence with respect to Iran and Russia, he focuses on how the trans-Atlantic conflict about the extraterritorial application of unilateral U.S. sanctions could be contained in the past and what lessons may be derived for future cooperation.
