The Franco-German Bond and the Future of the EU

Please join us for a panel discussion with Valéry Freland, Consul General of France in Boston, and Ralf Horlemann, Consul General of Germany in Boston. Moderated by Vesko Garcevic, Professor of the Practice of International Relations and former Ambassador of Montenegro in Brussels (NATO) and Vienna (OSCE), and William Keylor, Professor of History and International Relations at Boston University. The discussion will be centered on Franco-German relations and the EU. Can Macron revive Franco-German relations? The EU can’t be regarded as too German, yet Germany is a critical actor for the future of Europe. Both states need one another. The leaders of France and Germany have announced proposals to strengthen Europe’s core, promising reforms such as a tighter Eurozone and a stronger single currency. The idea of a “multi-speed” Europe has also been revived. Another issue for France and Germany is how small EU states will react to a stronger Franco-German alliance. What will be the balance of power within the EU following Brexit?
