Terriers Connect training for faculty and staff

Program Description The Terriers Connect training program teaches faculty and staff to identify signs of distress, develop effective skills for communicating with and supporting students, and provide accurate information about referrals to mental health professionals. Terriers Connect is committed to creating a community at Boston University that understands that the conversations that surround mental health are hard, but necessary. We offer a 1.5-hour, interactive training program that includes: • Review of college student mental health statistics and facts • Discussion of warning signs of distress • Instruction on how to refer students to mental health professionals • Review of effective communication and relationship-building skills • Participation in experiential exercises Desired Outcomes By the end of a training, participants should: • Be familiar with some basic statistics and facts regarding college student mental health • Understand warning signs that someone may be struggling • Know how to ask a student about suicide and self-harm • Feel better prepared to respond to someone in crisis and know who to refer that person to appropriate mental health professionals
