Publishing Ethics and Matters of Provenance: Two Case Studies

As part of the Brown Bag lecture series, the Boston University Archaeology Department presents “Publishing Ethics and Matters of Provenance:Two CaseStudies”, a talk by Becky Martin (Boston University). Light refreshments will be served. This presentation will compare the recovery and publication history of two fragmentary floor mosaics from the eastern Mediterranean. One, excavated in Israel, was published by excavators in both academic and popular journals. Subsequent publications have enriched or disputed the excavators’ claims. The other mosaic, looted from Turkey, will soon appear for the first time in an academic journal in an attempt to "restore" its provenance. The discussion will focus on the many decisions that confront academics as we share and promote our work, including dilemmas faced when the discourse about our work is taken up by others.
