Feature Filmmaking Program Workshop with Jay Craven

Independent feature filmmaker Jay Craven (BU ’72) will visit Boston University for a special workshop and presentation from 5 to 6pm, Tuesday, April 30th (at COM 317). Craven will discuss his experience in independent financing, production, and distribution—for his six feature films, five documentaries, and an Emmy-winning regional TV comedy series. He will also discuss plans for a film intensive semester at Marlboro College, where 25 students from multiple colleges will collaborate next year with 15 professionals to make a feature film for national release. Craven’s “Movies from Marlboro” project will take place during the winter/spring semester 2014. It will include a week at the Sundance Film Festival and seven weeks of study and prep at Marlboro College in southern Vermont. In mid-March, students and professionals will then move to Nantucket island where they will film “Peter and John,” an intense 19th century psychological drama about love, legitimacy, identity, family, and money, based on the acclaimed novel by French writer Guy du Maupassant. “Movies from Marlboro-2014” will be the second fully-credited “semester away” project directed by Craven. The first round was held in 2012, where the students earned college credit while collaborating with professionals to make Craven’s recently completed film, “Northern Borders,” starring Academy Award nominees Bruce Dern and Genevieve Bujold along with Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick (“Moonrise Kingdom”) and Jessica Hecht (“Sideways,” “Seinfeld”). Participating students came from colleges including Wellesley, Mount Holyoke, NYU, Sarah Lawrence, and Connecticut College. Three BU students also participated in the 2012 “Northern Borders” production. They include art department coordinator Kaity Reilly (CFA ’13) and actresses Kaley Ronayne (CFA ’12) and Alicia Lyn Hunt (CFA- MFA ’12). More information about “Movies From Marlboro-2104” will be available at the workshop where a 30-minute behind-the-scenes documentary will also be shown.
