Errors Associated with the Use of Computerized Prescribing: Perspectives and Recommendations

MEDICAL INFORMATICS SEMINARAbstract: Computerized prescribing has been widely promoted as a tool to prevent medical errors that are associated with pen-and-paper prescribing. In addition, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) provides additional financial incentives for healthcare systems to adopt this technology. But with all changes come unintended consequences. This presentation will provide an overview of errors associated with the use of computerized prescribing systems by examining issues found on computer-generated prescriptions, and their impact on physicians and pharmacists. It will also offer recommendations to implementers and users of computerized prescribing on how these errors could be prevented.
