Beyond Aesthetics: Sacred Music as a Calling
The BU Institute for Philosophy and Religion's 2012-13 Lecture Series: “Beyond Aesthetics: Sacred Music as a Calling,” Gordon Graham (Princeton Theological Seminary). Gordon Graham is Henry Luce III Professor of Philosophy and the Arts at Princeton Theological Seminary and an Anglican priest in the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey. He taught philosophy in Scotland at the University of St Andrews (1975-95), and at the University of Aberdeen (1995 -2005) before taking up his post in Princeton. He has been Sheffer Visiting Professor of Religion at The Colorado College, and Stanton Lecturer in Philosophy and Religion at the University of Cambridge. He was Director of the St Andrews University Music Centre from 1991-5, and has taught as an Adjunct Professor of Sacred Music at the Westminster Choir College of Rider University, New Jersey. Professor Graham is founding editor of the Journal of Scottish Philosophy, and the Kuyper Center Review. Among the books he has published are Evil and Christian Ethics (Cambridge University Press, 2001),! The Re-enchantment of the World: art versus religion (Oxford University Press, 2007) and Theories of Ethics (Routledge, 2010). His textbook Philosophy of the Arts (Routledge, 3rd edition 2005) has been translated into many languages including Russian, Persian and Chinese. He is currently completing a book on Wittgenstein and Natural Religion. The aim of this talk is to show how philosophical debates about the nature of music as an art can be made to throw light on a problem about the role of music in worship.
