Network Analysis of Patent Citations

Patent applications include citations to other patents. The patents are thus the nodes and the citations are the directed links in a large network. I will discuss the structure and evolution of this patent citation network. In particular we will look at the degree distribution and the dependence on the time between patent applications. I will also discuss how we can use the patent citations to predict newly emerging technological areas. We will do a cluster analysis using a novel citation vector which identifies the type of technology for each node.
