Advanced Approach to Substance Abuse Treatment
This course is directed toward providers who have older adults with substance use problems in their practice. The course discusses the various theories of the causes of addictive behavior, particularly as these relate to treatment philosophies. Many researchers and experts in the field of substance abuse believe that people who have addictive behavioral problems go through stages of change as they deal with their addictions. Tailoring interventions to the stage of change the client is in has shown to be most useful in treating substance abuse. This course pays particular attention to the benefits of motivational interviewing as the client moves along a continuum of change.
