Strategic Message
Our current business practices and infrastructure cannot support the growth we hope to achieve over the next decade and beyond. BUworks provides a campus-wide program devoted to ensuring we have the people, processes, and technology in place to support information needs and future growth.
BUworks involves:
- Streamlining, standardizing, or eliminating many of the underlying processes we use to conduct University business
- Standardizing much of our business data and information so it is consistent across the University and business functions
- Developing and implementing web-based technology, a portal, so we can effectively share business information and complete common business tasks
- Equipping our employees with the skill sets they need to benefit from the changes BUworks will bring, and to adapt to continuing changes in higher education over time
These efforts overlap. Together they will build an integrated infrastructure that supports Human Resource, Financial Management, Procurement, Payroll, Budget, and Research Administration across the University, with particular emphasis on improving our core business practices. This implementation will also improve our ability to manage business across the University by fostering collaboration and consistency of information, and enabling the University to respond with agility and flexibility to employee and business expectations.
BUworks Benefits
BUworks will benefit Boston University in many ways. From the perspective of the University, BUworks will:
- Release our faculty from administrative burdens allowing them to focus their time on research and education and their own work/life balance.
- Improve employee effectiveness and satisfaction by offering access to enterprise technology and skill sets, improving our employee development processes, and easing employees’ day-to-day tasks by helping them work smarter and not just harder.
- Lower the total cost of ownership by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of existing business processes.
- Produce a “smarter” business in which leaders of all levels – faculty and administration – will have access to information that is more immediate, more accurate, and more actionable than anything we’ve had to date…which will greatly enhance the speed and quality of our own decision-making processes.
- Increase our speed and responsiveness, both in our raw ability to perform core functions, and in our ability to respond with flexibility and agility to information requests.
