“In Your Facebook” sparks debate on social media and the job search

On Monday, September 20th, the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center hosted a panel, “In Your Facebook,” which focused on the use of social networks in professional networking and the job search. Associate Professors John Carroll and Stephen Quigley of the College of Communication, and Eleanor Cartelli, Associate Director of Marketing & Communications for the Center for Career Development, focused on the use of tools like Facebook and LinkedIn, and touched on implications of students making every aspect of their lives public online.

A debate sparked on the Internet’s role in broadening or limiting users’ world views. Professor Carroll warned against limiting news sources to online-only, and advised using “Old Media” to avoid the “echo chamber” phenomenon (consulting only sources we agree with, cutting off other opinions.)
