The Nursing Archives Associates presents their annual meeting with talk by Dr. Jeanette Ives Erickson

Tonight The Nursing Archives Associates at Boston University and the Boston University Alumni Association will host their annual meeting with guest speaker Dr. Jeanette Ives Erickson, (RN, DNP, FAAN) for her talk The Evolution and Revolution in Patient Care. A graduate of Boston University Graduate School of Nursing, Dr. Erickson is Senior Vice President for Patient Care and Chief Nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The event will also feature the inaugural presentation of the Nursing Archives Associates Mary Ann Garrigan Award to honor outstanding professional achievement in nursing. The meeting will take place in the first floor auditorium of the School of Management at 5:30 p.m.

The History of Nursing Archives contains an extensive book collection, as well as the personal and professional papers of nursing leaders; records of educational institutions, public health groups, and nursing organizations; and histories of various American and foreign schools of nursing. The books and manuscripts in the History of nursing Archives document the evolution and contribution of the nursing profession in the fields of public health and military history.

Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras Spring Gala: “A Little Night Music”

On Thursday, May 10th, the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) will host its annual spring gala at the Mandarin Oriental, Boston from 6:30-9:30 p.m. This year’s event will feature an intimate performance of Mozart’s Eine Kleine NachtMuzik (A Little Night Music) by young musicians from BYSO’s premier orchestra, Boston Youth Symphony, conducted by Music Director Federico Cortese. This evening will also include a casual spread of food and cocktails as well as both a live and silent auction. Items include an autographed John Williams Star Wars score, a Red Sox package with 4 box seats, Bruins box seats, and a Stowe, VT vacation package. Tickets for this event are $150, available for purchase here. All proceeds will go towards financial aid awards for BYSO students.

Boston University Celebrates More Than 1.5 Million Pounds of Surplus Property Provided to Charities

Aided by Boston University Sustainability, more than 1.5 million pounds of surplus furniture and equipment have been provided to charities since 2002 from BU. Last month, as part of its Earth Week observances, BU hosted IRN – The Institutional Recycling Network and Food For The Poor (FFTP), who have been partners with Boston University.

Through its partnerships, Boston University has recovered more than 525,000 pounds of surplus in 2011 alone and distributed among relief projects in more than a dozen countries including Africa, Asia and the Caribbean Basin. The University’s surplus program has kept more than 400,000 pounds of BU surplus out of the trash including furniture and equipment. Given the success of the program since its inception nearly twelve years ago, BU is now recognized as a leader nationwide in surplus property reuse. In addition to IRN and FFTP, BU works with Boston area nonprofits as much as it can to keep surplus local.

Google chairman Eric Schmidt to deliver commencement address

Eric E. Schmidt, executive chairman of Google, will deliver the commencement address at Boston University’s 139^thgraduation ceremonies at BU’s Nickerson Field at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 20.

Mr. Schmidt will speak before more than 5,000 graduates and 20,000 guests at New England’s largest graduation ceremony. Schmidt will receive an honorary Doctor of Science.

BU President Robert A. Brown announced the commencement, baccalaureate speakers and honorary degree recipients to the members of the Class of 2012 this morning at the annual Senior Breakfast, held at the George Sherman Union.

Brown also revealed that The Honorable Sandra Lynch, chief judge of the United States Court of Appeals First Circuit, will deliver the Commencement Day baccalaureate address at 11:00 a.m. at Marsh Chapel. Lynch will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.

The prestigious list of honorary degree recipients also includes former chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation, Norman Augustine (Doctor of Science); Vietnam Medal of Honor recipient, Thomas G. Kelley (Doctor of Laws); and noted actor, Leonard Nimoy (Doctor of Humane Letters).

Also announced today are the recipients of BU’s Metcalf Cup and Prize and Metcalf Awards for Excellence in Teaching. Receiving the esteemed Metcalf Cup is Andrew Duffy, master lecturer of physics at the College of Arts and Sciences. This year’s Metcalf Award winners are Marisa Milanese, lecturer in the Arts & Sciences Writing Program; and Robert Lowe, associate professor of medicine at the School of Medicine. The Metcalf Cup carries with it a prize of $10,000 and the Metcalf Award winners receive $5,000. Students, faculty and alumni nominate candidates for the awards established in 1973 by a gift from the late Boston University Board of Trustees chairman emeritus Arthur G.B. Metcalf.

BU Academy Spring Concert and Financial Aid Benefit

This Friday, May 4th, Boston University Academy will hold its annual Spring Concert followed by a financial aid benefit. The Spring Concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Marsh Chapel. This show will feature the Chamber Orchestra and Choral Ensemble performing a new completion of Mozart’s Requiem, including 15 instrumentals and 25 vocalists. This event is free but an RSVP is requested. Following the concert at 8:30 p.m., the Academy community will be invited to a dessert reception with live jazz music at the George Sherman Union Back Court. At this reception the drawing for the highly anticipated cash raffle will take place. Tickets for the reception are $20 for adults, while BUA students and siblings are welcome free of charge. This reception and the cash raffle directly support fundraising efforts for the BUA financial aid program.

AGNI celebrates its 40th anniversary and 75th issue

At 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1st, literary magazine AGNI will host a party to launch its 75th issue and 40th anniversary at the Boston Playwrights’ Theatre. This celebration will start with a Robert Lowell “extravaganza” that includes a slideshow of never-before-released photos of the Boston native. Fanny Howe, Tom Sleigh, Lloyd Schwartz and many others will offer their reflections on the man and his poems. The release party, which is free and open to the public, will follow.

Change the Game Conference: Re-designing sport for greater impact

Boston University’s School of Education is partnering with Up2Us and Edgework Consulting to host the Change the Game Conference on April 27th and 28th. With Dean Conway as the conference mentor, Change the Game is an unorthodox conference that encourages participation and creativity by its attendees. Participants include individuals who run youth sports programs and leagues with an interest in using new techniques to enhance youth development on and off the field. Conference hosts and mentors will introduce the concept of Sports System (re-) Design, an approach that implements simple changes in youth sports to amplify the impact of sports leagues and programs. The registration fee is $150.00 with a discounted student rate of $75.00. The conference will take place at the Boston University Photonics Center.

School of Social Work Welcomes Dr. Paul Farmer

On Boston University’s annual Global Day of Service, Saturday, April 14, the University will welcome Dr. Paul Farmer, co-founder of Partners in Health (PIH), as the guest speaker for the Hubie Jones Lecture. Dr. Farmer and PIH provide health care and advocacy services for people living in poverty around the world. The Hubie Jones Lecture in Urban Health is an annual symposium addressing vexing health issues distinct to the urban context. Prominent national and international leaders toiling at the intersection of health and social justice present on health-centric topics of importance. The lecture honors the vision of Hubie Jones, dean emeritus of Boston University’s School of Social Work, who inspired and shaped the School’s urban mission during his 16-year tenure and who continues to influence and define the social and civic landscape of Boston as a leader, bridge-builder and advocate.

Today is the final day to register. The event is free and open to the public but space is limited. The lecture will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2012 in the School of Law Auditorium. The event will also be streaming live at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/bu-alumni.

Author Pete Hamill comes to Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center

On Wednesday, April 18th, award-winning journalist, novelist, essayist, editor and educator Pete Hamill will be hosted by the The Friends of the Libraries at Boston University to give the nineteenth Abraham S. Burack Lecture. Mr. Hamill, who has won several journalism and literary awards and is a Distinguished Writer in Residence at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University, will give a lecture reflecting on his life and career and will also be available to sign books. Mr. Hamill’s papers are part of the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center at Boston University. Prizes for the Lawrence G. Blackmon Student Book Collecting Contest will be awarded preceding the lecture. This event is free to students with a BU ID and $25 for non-members and guests. The talk begins at 6:00 p.m. in Metcalf Hall. A cocktail reception will follow.

Dr. Melvin L. DeFleur Distinguished Lecture Series

On Thursday April 5th, Dr. Maxwell McCombs will give a lecture as part of the College of Communication‘s Dr. Melvin L. DeFleur Distinguished Lecture Series. Dr. McCombs, who is Professor and Jesse H. Jones Chair in Communications at the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin, will present “Do the Media Tell Us What to Think About? The Psychology of Agenda Setting.” His lecture will address the contemporary communication landscape in which an unprecedented amount of information is available for consumption and navigation and the role the media plays in shaping how we perceive it. His talk will take place in the Colloquium Room of the Photonics Center from 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. with a reception to follow. This event is free and open to the public.
