udent Food Rescue (SFR) was founded by a group of BU student volunteers in the spring of 1988, and [...]has since become an integral part of the CSC. Volunteers collect nearly 150,000 pounds of food annually from Boston restaurants, supermarkets, bakeries, grocery surplus facilities and coffee shops.
SFR organizes 21 weekly food runs, which salvage food from donor sites and deliver it to area pantries and shelters. Volunteers have the satisfaction of seeing the direct impact of their work as they rescue and donate food. SFR also organizes other one-time opportunities and events throughout the year, specifically during Hunger Awareness Week in the fall.
Time commitment for food runs is 1-2 hours per week for an entire semester. Food runs are at various times throughout the day, Monday-Friday. No previous experience is required.
SFR rescues food from locations including Whole Foods, Panera Bread and Starbucks and brings it to locations including Boston Rescue Mission, Safe Haven for Women and the New England Shelter for Homeless veterans.
