Teny Gross Lecture - November 10th, 2014

Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence

Lecture by Teny Gross

Monday, November 10, [...]2014

5:00-6:30pm
Boston University School of Theology Room B-24745 Commonwealth Ave., Boston, MA 02215

Teny Gross will speak about his work at the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence (ISPN) and the life experiences that led him to that work. ISPN was established in 2001 in response to the alarming number of violent deaths of Providence youth. In 1999, 26 people were murdered in Providence; and that number leapt to 30 in 2000 (and 45 statewide). In the words of Sister Ann Keefe, one of ISPN’s founders, “The sheer number of deaths of young people by young people promoted [us] to do more than preach and teach. We were determined to create a center of nonviolence that focuses on confronting violence with nonviolence. Providing training opportunities in nonviolence that could stir hearts into a change of life. Nonviolence training is the core that built the Institute. The other dimensions provide the vehicles for that change.” While ISPN’s long-term mission is about building a culture of nonviolence, ISPN’s immediate objective and unique contribution is working to prevent youth and young-adult violence, and particularly youth gang violence. It does this by intervening directly in violent and potentially violent situations, supporting victims, and simultaneously introducing the philosophy and methods of nonviolence as a better alternative.
