ASB 2010: Harlan County

Every year hundreds of Boston University students chose to make a difference, volunteering in [...]disaster zones and troubled communities across the country, joining Alternative Spring Break trips organized by BU’s Community Service Center.

These volunteers spent the week building a roof over a wheelchair ramp and enclosing a bathroom at Cranks Holiness Church in infamous Harlan County, Kentucky. The majority of the students had never even hammered a nail — let alone installed a bathroom ceiling — but they learned.
