Salute to Stellwagen: Free Lecture Series

A series of free lectures have been organized to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Among the guest speakers is our own BUMP Prof. Les Kaufman.

April 12: “The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary – Its Future” presented by Les Kaufman, a professor of biology in the Boston University Marine Program, the Senior Marine Scientist for Conservation International, an associate in Ichthyology at the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology, and research scholar at The New England Aquarium. Kaufman, who holds a doctorate in marine biology from Johns Hopkins, has conducted research in the Mass Bay—Stellwagen Bank area for 31 years. Whenever possible he is outdoors, either fishing, hiking, birdwatching, or diving.

Sloan Research Fellowship award for 2012

Congratulations to Prof. Robinson (Wally) Fulweiler, BUMP Associate Director: “The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation is pleased to announce the selection of 126 outstanding U.S. and Canadian researchers as recipients of Sloan Research Fellowships for 2012. Awarded annually since 1955, the fellowships are given to early-career scientists and scholars whose achievements and potential identify them as rising stars, the next generation of scientific leaders.”


BUMP Lecturer Randi Rotjan (New England Aquarium)

BUMP lecturer and New England Aquarium associate scientist Randi Rotjan was one of three experts invited to speak at the Advancing Science, Serving Society (AAAS) “Cutting Edge: The Oceans” lecture series (subscription required). Randi discussed five cutting edge topics in coral reef science: symbiosis, “omics” as reef diagnostics, ocean acidification, marine protected areas and connectivity.
