Minor Concentration in Journalism
The minor concentration in journalism has been designed for students who want a general introduction to the concepts and practices of the professional journalist. This minor concentration is restricted to the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Fine Arts, and College of Engineering students.
Prerequisites for entering the program are a minimum grade of B in CAS WR 150 Writing and Research Seminar or CAS EN 220 Proseminar in Literature, and a grade of B in COM CO 201 Introduction to Communication Writing. The minor concentration should be declared before the end of the second semester of the sophomore year to ensure sufficient time to complete its requirements.
Required Courses
The following three courses are required for the minor concentration:
COM JO 307 Newswriting and Reporting I
COM JO 308 Newswriting and Reporting II
COM JO 357 History and Principles of Journalism
And two courses from the following six:
COM JO 301 Production and Design
COM JO 309 Feature Writing
COM JO 403 Magazine Writing and Editing (prereq: COM JO 308)
COM JO 503 Journalism Research (prereq: COM JO 308)
COM JO 501 Introduction to Business and Economics Reporting (prereq: COM JO 308)
COM JO 525 Media Law and Ethics
Plus one additional COM JO elective.
Registration for all COM courses is on a space-available basis.
A grade point average of 2.3 is required in all COM courses. No transfer credit may be used to fulfill the program's six-course residence requirement in the College of Communication. Students must register for COM CO 201 at the College of Communication Office of Student Services (COM Room 123), and for all other courses at the corresponding COM department.
