Participating departments and Schools include Anthropology, the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies, Economics, Geography, History, Modern Foreign Languages, Political Science, Religion, Sociology, the College of Communication, the University Professors Program, and the School of Management. This comprehensive participation engages the extensive resources of Boston University, permits flexibility, and offers a breadth of courses unusual in an international relations program. The program meets the standards of interdisciplinary programs set by the College of Arts and Sciences. Strong emphasis is placed on individual student counseling through assigned advisors. Concentration in International Relations (0317)Note: Students who have declared an international relations concentration prior to September 2007 continue to be subject to the requirements of the bulletin that was current at the time of their declaration. Students who declare an international relations concentration in or after September 2007 are subject to the following: Twelve courses with two prerequisites are required for an undergraduate concentration in international relations. These include four required principal courses, four courses from a functional track, and four courses from a regional track (for details, see below). A grade of C or higher is required in all principal and track courses. At least two courses in the concentration must be taken at the 400 level or above. Students concentrating in international relations are encouraged to fulfill their College mathematics requirements in statistics. Students must fulfill concentration requirements, including track requirements, as stipulated below. Students concentrating in international relations are encouraged to study abroad for at least one semester. Courses taken overseas must be approved by the department for credit toward the concentration. CGS students, upon admission to CAS, will be given credit for CGS SS 202 as a substitute for CAS IR 350. Minor Concentration in International Relations (B-0317)A minor concentration in international relations consists of six courses with a grade of C or higher, including the four required principal courses. Required Principal Courses Required principal courses are designed to develop a general understanding of the economic, political, historic, and geographic factors that influence the international system. Students must take all four of the courses listed below; students electing the functional track in international economics and business must take CAS EC 392 or SMG IM 345 in place of CAS IR 292. CAS IR 271 Introduction to International Relations CAS IR 292 Fundamentals of International Economics (CAS EC 101 and EC 102 are prereqs) CAS IR 349 History of International Relations, 1900–45 CAS IR 350 History of International Relations since 1945 International Relations TracksThe Department of International Relations offers courses in 10 subfields, known as "tracks." Tracks are divided into two types: functional and regional. Undergraduate concentrators must select a functional track, consisting of four courses, and a regional track, consisting of four courses. No course may be used in more than one track. This arrangement is designed to give the undergraduate concentrator a reasonable facility in an important functional subfield of international relations, as well as an understanding of at least one part of the world.
