Internship Programs

The Division of International Programs coordinates overseas and U.S. study and internship programs for students in all the University's Schools and Colleges. Students may study overseas through a Boston University program, through programs sponsored by other American institutions, or by enrolling directly in a foreign institution. Programs sponsored by Boston University allow students to study language, liberal arts, and the social sciences in China, Ecuador, England, France, Germany, Guatemala, Israel, Italy, Japan, Niger, and Spain; to intern in Australia, China, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, and the U.S.; to enroll in a professional teaching abroad program in Australia, Ecuador, or England; to study engineering and science in Germany, Mexico, and Israel; or to participate in summer programs offered in Argentina, Australia, China, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Peru, Senegal, Spain, and the U.S. Students in most disciplines—from humanities to the natural sciences, communications, and business—should be able to study abroad if they plan ahead. Students enrolled in internship programs replace one of their courses with an unpaid, academically directed internship, and earn between 8-20 Boston University credits.

The Auckland Programs provide students with several options, including an American-length semester internship program during the fall semester, and an extended direct enrollment semester in the spring at one of two major New Zealand universities, with the option of an internship. (16 credits)

The Dresden Internship Program combines an internship with academic coursework at the Technische Universität Dresden. Internship placements vary according to students' interests, backgrounds, previous work experiences, and language abilities. Most internships are offered in business, television, human services, international relations, and theater; however, the program provides opportunities in a variety of disciplines, so students from all majors are encouraged to apply.

The Dublin Internship Program combines full-time internships with academic coursework. Internship placement areas include advertising and public relations; arts and arts administration; business and economics; film and television; health and human services; hospitality administration; information technology and telecommunications; journalism; politics; and prelaw. This program is offered in the fall, spring, and summer. (16 credits/semester, 8 summer)

The Geneva Internship Program, in collaboration with the University of Geneva, will provide students with a rare opportunity to connect with and play a role in international diplomacy, business, and humanitarian concerns through an in-depth professional internship and carefully focused coursework. Students may enroll in either of two tracks: Public Health and International Relations, History and Politics. The program is offered in the fall and spring. (16 credits)

The London Internship Program combines full-time internships with academic coursework. It offers eleven fields of study: advertising, marketing, and public relations; arts and arts administration; business and economics; film and television; hospitality and tourism, journalism; management and finance; politics and international relations; prelaw; psychology and social policy; and theatre studies. The program is offered in the fall, spring, and summer. (16 credits/semester, 12 summer)

The Los Angeles Internship Program offers students a semester of study and work in the heart of the film and television industry. Courses are taught by Boston University faculty and alumni who also provide internship positions and serve as mentors in and out of the classroom. Students will enroll in one of two tracks: Film and Television, Advertising and Public Relations, or Entertainment Management and Law. Students participate in the film and television industry through internships that complement their previous work experience and professional goals. Students work full-time, four days a week. The program is offered in the fall, spring, and summer. (16 credits/semester, 12 summer)

Qualified students enrolled in the Madrid Language and Liberal Arts Program have the option to participate in the Madrid Internship Program. Students take three courses in addition to working 12-15 hours per week for the entire semester. Internship areas include advertising and public relations; arts and arts administration; business and economics; film and television; health and human services; journalism; politics; prelaw; and teaching of English to speakers of foreign languages (TOEFL). The program is offered in the fall, spring, and summer. (16 credits/semester, 8 summer)

The Paris Internship Program is a distinctive language and cultural immersion program that combines intensive language coursework with full-time internships and enables students to become fully engaged participants in French society. Internship areas include advertising and public relations; arts and arts administration; business and economics; film and television; health and human services; hospitality administration; international organizations; journalism; law; and politics. The program is offered in the fall, spring, and summer. (16 credits/semester, 8 summer)

The Shanghai Internship Program offers students with at least 2 years of college-level Chinese the opportunity to combine language and cultural study at Fudan University with a full-time internship. Internship areas include business and economics, advertising, marketing and public relations, and film and television, among others. (16 credits/semester)

The Sydney Internship Program combines full-time internships with academic coursework in one of the pivotal cities of the Pacific Rim. Internship areas include advertising and public relations; arts and arts administration; business and economics; film and television; health and human services; hospitality administration; journalism; and politics. The program is offered in the fall, spring, and summer. (16 credits/semester, 8 summer)

Established more than 25 years ago, the Washington, D.C. Internship Program combines full-time internships with academic coursework. Internship emphasis is on both international and national issues. The program is offered in the fall, spring, and summer. (16 credits/semester, 8 summer)

The Washington, D.C. Journalism Program offers graduate and undergraduate journalism students the chance to spend a semester in Washington, D.C., meeting newsmakers, working in the bureaus of national news organizations, reporting on Congress and the federal government for New England news outlets, and studying political reporting in the city where national news is made every day. Participants have the opportunity to make valuable contacts with working journalists at national news organizations, both on the job and in the classroom. The program is offered in the fall and spring. (16 credits)

Language and Liberal Arts Programs

Students in the Dresden Programs study in an intensive language and cultural immersion setting which offers direct enrollment at the Technische Universität Dresden and accommodations in German dormitories. Students choose from four programs: University Studies, Internship, Engineering, or Science. All courses are taught in German, except those in engineering and science. Fall, spring, and academic-year programs are offered. (15–20 credits/semester)

The Grenoble Language and Liberal Arts Program in France is an intensive language and cultural immersion program offering direct enrollment at the Université de Grenoble and accommodations in French households. Academic options are available at various language levels. Courses are taught exclusively in French. Fall, spring, summer, and academic-year programs are offered. (16 credits/semester, 8 summer)

The Haifa Language and Liberal Arts Internship Program in Israel offers Hebrew language and culture study at the University of Haifa, where students are housed in dormitories, with Israeli students as suitemates. Courses are taught in English and Hebrew. Fall, spring, and academic-year programs are offered. (16–20 credits/semester)

The Madrid Language and Liberal Arts Program is an intensive language and cultural immersion program held at the Instituto Internacional en España, with accommodations in Spanish households. Academic options are available at various language levels and through direct enrollment at the Universidad Autónoma. Courses are taught in Spanish. Fall, spring, summer, and academic-year programs are offered. (16 credits/semester, 8 summer)

The Niamey International Development Program (Niger, West Africa) is a unique language and cultural immersion program in French, Hausa, and/or Zarma, with a focus on development in the Third World. The program is offered in conjunction with the Université Abdou Moumouni. Individual field placements and community service opportunities allow students to participate in and observe an African way of life relatively untouched by Western influences. Fall, spring, and academic-year programs are offered. (16 credits/semester)

The Oxford Honors Studies Program is a modern British studies program with an emphasis on politics, history, or literature, offered at St. Anne's College of the University of Oxford in England. Students experience the traditional Oxford tutorial system under the guidance of Oxford faculty. Fall, spring, and academic-year programs are offered. (16 credits/semester)

The Padova Language and Liberal Arts Program in Italy is an intensive language and cultural immersion program offering courses at Boston University's Center for Italian and European Studies and direct enrollment at the Università degli Studi di Padova and accommodations in Italian households or dormitories. Academic options are available at various language levels. Courses are taught in Italian. Fall, spring, summer, and academic-year programs are offered. (16 credits/semester, 8 summer)

The Quito Language and Liberal Arts Program offers direct enrollment at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, with coursework in liberal arts and sciences. Students are housed with Ecuadorian families. Courses are taught exclusively in Spanish. Fall, spring, and academic-year programs are offered. (15–18 credits/semester)

The Shanghai Language and Culture Program offers beginning Chinese language students an opportunity to study intensive Chinese language while also studying Chinese history and culture in English. All courses are taught at Fudan University. (16 credits/semester)

Study abroad programs are offered through the School of Education in England, Australia, and Ecuador. Students in the field of education have the opportunity to gain international experience through Boston University's School of Education Programs. Students earn 16 semester-hour credits in specialized coursework in cross-cultural studies, international education, and student teaching in a community institution.

Engineering and Science Programs

The Guatemala Archaeology Program offers students an opportunity to study Maya archaeology through total immersion in ongoing research projects at San Bartolo. Courses are taught in English. The program is offered only in the spring of even-numbered years. (16 credits)

The Dresden Engineering Program is ideally suited for second-semester sophomores and designed for engineering students who wish to combine engineering coursework in English with the study of German. It is further designed to fit neatly into engineering students' existing curricula and requirements. After completing the intensive German-language course, engineering students will choose three out of six courses at the Technische Universität Dresden—Differential Equations, Electric Circuit Theory, Waves and Modern Physics, Linear Algebra, Principles of Biology and Thermodynamics—and will also take The Social Nature of Technology. Spring only. (20 credits)

Ideally suited for first-semester sophomores, the Dresden Science Program is designed for science students who want to combine science coursework in English with the study of German. It is further designed to fit neatly into science students' existing curricula and requirements. Students will take an intensive beginning German course and choose three electives from the following: Organic Chemistry I, Cell Biology, Basic Statistics and Probability, and Sociology of Culture. Fall only. (16 credits)

The Ecuador Tropical Ecology Program is an 18-credit program operated in collaboration with the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ). Designed specifically for biology and environmental science concentrators, it provides a unique, semester-long program for students to study the ecology of flora and fauna of tropical Ecuador through intensive field-based experiences in the Galápagos Islands, the Amazon rainforest, and other locations. The program is offered in the fall and spring. (18 credits/semester)

The Guadalajara Engineering Program is ideally suited for second-semester sophomores in all engineering majors. It allows students to pursue engineering in a dynamic international setting while making normal progress toward their degrees. The program carries no prior language requirement; engineering and science courses are taught in English by Mexican faculty members. Spring only. (20 credits)

The Tel Aviv Engineering Program is ideally suited to second-semester sophomores in all engineering majors. It allows students to pursue engineering in a dynamic international setting while making normal progress toward their degrees. The program carries no prior language requirement; engineering and science courses are taught in English by Tel Aviv faculty members. Spring only. (20 credits)

Other Study Abroad Opportunities

The Acting in Hollywood/Writer in Hollywood Programs invite graduates of the Boston University School of Theatre and graduated students of other college/university theatre-training programs to participate in the College of Fine Arts (CFA) Acting in Hollywood Program.

Graduated students with a strong interest in writing for film and television are invited to participate in The Writer in Hollywood Program, a joint program with the CFA and the College of Communication (COM).

The Writer in Hollywood and Acting in Hollywood are both eight-credit, four-month intensive programs. Each program consists of one course and an internship. Upon completion of the program, students will receive a certificate.

Summer Programs

Summer international programs offer 8-16 credits for on-site programs lasting 6-13 weeks. Programs are currently offered in Argentina, Australia, China, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Peru, Senegal, Spain, and the U.S.

Summer Internship Programs

The London Graduate Mass Communication Program offers an opportunity for qualified graduate students to give their studies an international focus, with courses on international media, marketing, and communication. The program combines an internship, related coursework, and independent living. (16 credits)

The London Internship Program combines full-time internships with coursework in ten fields of study: advertising, marketing, and public relations; arts and arts administration; economics; film and television; hospitality and tourism; journalism; management and finance; politics and international relations; prelaw; and psychology and social policy. (12 credits)

In the Los Angeles Internship Program for entertainment marketing, public relations, and advertising, students enroll in two courses and participate in an internship. One course focuses on careers in Hollywood in advertising and public relations through a speaker series featuring Boston University alumni in the entertainment industry. The second course offers a survey of entertainment promotion. (12 credits)

The Madrid Internship Program is a distinctive seven-week language and cultural immersion program that enables students to become fully engaged participants in Spanish society. Areas of internships include advertising and public relations; arts and arts administration; business and economics; film and television; hospitality administration; health and human services; journalism; politics; prelaw; and teaching of English to speakers of foreign languages (TOEFL). (8 credits)

The Paris Internship Program offers enrolled students eight weeks of intensive language and cultural study as well as the option to participate in a professional internship in this peerless city and European capital. The program consists of three tracks. Track I offers a course in Elementary French for beginners and a course on Understanding Contemporary France, taught in English. In Track II, students enroll in two liberal arts courses, both taught in French. Track III combines a professional internship and a liberal arts course in French. (8 credits)

The Sydney Internship Program combines a full semester of coursework with an eight-week internship. Internship areas include advertising and public relations; the arts; business and economics; film and television; health and human services; hospitality administration; journalism; politics; and prelaw. The Washington, D.C. Internship Program is an eight-week program combining full-time Liberal Arts or Journalism internships with coursework during the summer. Internships emphasize both the international and the national arenas. (8 credits)

Summer Language and Liberal Arts Programs

Argentine Cultural Studies: Writing in the Americas is an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to live in Buenos Aires and study Argentine literature, culture, and language. Classes will be held on the downtown campus of the Universidad de San Andrés and room and board will be provided by Argentine families. (8 credits)

The Beijing Intensive Chinese Language Program offers an eight-week comprehensive introduction to the many facets of Chinese life through its spoken and written language. The program provides 20 hours of language instruction weekly, with lectures and field trips. The program is available at all Chinese language levels. (8 credits)

The Dakar Senegalese Studies Program offers students the opportunity to spend six weeks living and studying in Dakar, Senegal's vibrant, coastal capital. Coursework will introduce students to Senegalese culture through its literature, film, and performing arts. Students may also choose to study Wolof, one of the principal languages spoken in Senegal. Students live with Senegalese families. (8 credits)

The Dublin Internship Program, based at Dublin City University (DCU), combines a professional internship with coursework on various aspects of Ireland's dynamic history and contemporary culture, including its art, economy, literature, media, and politics. (8 credits)

The Grenoble Language and Liberal Arts Program in France is an intensive six-week program offering intermediate through advanced levels of French at the Université de Grenoble. Students reside in French households. The program may be completed before joining Boston University's fall Paris Internship Program, Grenoble, or Niger programs, or on its own as preparation for study in a French university. (8 credits)

The Lima and Ayacucho: Understanding Contemporary Peru Program offers six weeks of study of Peru's twentieth-century history and politics, emphasizing the rise and fall of the Shining Path guerrilla movement. All coursework is taught in Spanish. (10 credits)

The London Liberal Arts Program provides students with the opportunity to spend six weeks studying the many facets of contemporary British culture. The program offers a broad range of courses that examine the arts, politics, economics, social policy, and the media of Great Britain. (8 credits)

The Madrid Language and Liberal Arts Program is an intensive six-week language and cultural immersion program held at the Instituto Internacional en España. Students live in Spanish households. Academic options are available at various language levels. Excursions complement the curriculum. (8 credits)

The Padova Language and Liberal Arts Program in Italy offers seven weeks of intensive language and cultural immersion with academic options available at various levels. Courses are taught in Italian and English, using the rich cultural offerings of both Venice and Padova as an integral part of the curriculum. (8 credits)

The Sydney Film Studies Program offers students the opportunity to spend seven weeks studying contemporary film in one of its most vibrant centers. Scheduled to coincide with the annual Sydney Film Festival, this is a unique program whose coursework examines Australian film and filmmaking. (8 credits)

The Tuscany Landscape Painting Program offers both painting majors and nonmajors the opportunity to spend six weeks studying landscape painting on the estate of Capitignano in Tuscany overlooking the olive groves and vineyards of the Mugello Valley. Students will enroll in two courses: a landscape painting course and a second course in either art history or elementary Italian language. (8 credits)

Summer Science Program

The Mediterranean Archaeological Field School will take place at the site of Torre d'en Galmes on the Mediterranean island of Menorca, Spain. The program will consist of a six-week excavation campaign combined with lectures, museum and laboratory work, and study tours on the island's cultural and historical monuments. (8 credits)

Other Study Abroad Opportunities

Many programs are available for students in management, music, and fine arts. Please contact the Division of International Programs for full information. It is also possible to study abroad through another study abroad program or through direct enrollment at a foreign university.

Semester, academic year, and summer options are available, although direct enrollment in a foreign institution must generally be done for an academic year. Credits earned overseas, including those from Boston University programs, can be applied toward concentration, distribution, or elective requirements. However, students should begin planning early so that they can acquire language proficiency as necessary and can build study abroad into their academic plans.

To participate in non-Boston University study abroad programs, students must meet the admission requirements of the overseas program to which they are applying and should apply for credit transfer through the Division of International Programs. Study Abroad Resource Center

Students interested in study abroad options offered by Boston University and other institutions should visit the Study Abroad Resource Center, located on the fifth floor of 232 Bay State Road. Open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Study Abroad Resource Center contains numerous reference guides on study and work abroad programs for both undergraduate and graduate students. Students can examine brochures from other institutions and guidelines on study abroad published by the Division of International Programs. Students can also consult foreign university catalogs if they are interested in direct enrollment. In addition, the Study Abroad Resource Center houses reference guides.
