School of Theology Student Body

Students come to the Boston University School of Theology from all corners of the United States and all parts of the world. Some come fresh out of their undergraduate institutions, while others have been teaching or preaching for many years in their communities. Whether experienced or not, these students come to Boston University to pursue a higher level of theological inquiry at the School of Theology. The following information illustrates the great diversity shown by students attending the School.

Demographic Information of Current Students

While Boston University School of Theology is a seminary affiliated with the United Methodist Church, a significant number of students study at the School from other churches and denominations. A recent snapshot of our student body shows 45 percent of the students in the Master of Divinity program were members of the United Methodist Church. Other Methodist denominations made up an additional 14 percent (including the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Christian Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, and the Korean Methodist Church). Students from nearly 15 other churches studied in the MDiv degree program, including significant numbers from the United Church of Christ, the American Baptist Churches in the USA, the Episcopal Church, and the Unitarian-Universalist Association.

Fifty-six percent of the student body in the MDiv, MTS, and MSM degrees were age 30 or younger. Fifty-three percent of these students are female and forty-seven percent are male. Twenty-five percent of these students identified themselves as members of a non-white ethnic population. Twenty percent of the total student population are international students.

Over half of MDiv students came to the School of Theology from the New England area. Other students hailed from the Midwest, the Southeast, the West, and the Great Plains.
