A Message from the Dean
Boston University School of Education has a long history of excellence in teaching and preparing students to be effective as classroom teachers, administrators, policy experts, and academics. As you browse through this publication, you will find a variety of stimulating programs. What cannot be captured in writing is the quality of positive interactions between students and faculty that characterizes this School. For that experience, I encourage you to visit us—to meet students and faculty to see how we can fulfill your professional development needs. You will also find our setting in the city of Boston to be as exciting as our programs.
This is a critical time to engage in the field of education. It has been noted that the student drop-out rate has never been lower in the United States, yet the cost of dropping out has never been higher. In a recent talk with the faculty of the School, we discussed current challenges to our profession. Some of the greatest needs involve equity and diversity. It is clear that, if we are to narrow the achievement gaps among socioeconomic groups, we need to help all students develop the skills they need to acquire good jobs. To do so, we need to develop educational practices that are consistently engaging and prepare students to enter a world filled with technology and social change.
I hope that you, as a prospective graduate student, strongly consider joining us for the next stage of your training, as we explore how to integrate science and practice in creative and effective ways to meet the challenge of providing a quality education for all students.
