Special Events and Visiting Scholars

Special Events

From time to time, the Graduate Tax Program sponsors special events and symposia which are of particular interest to tax practioners, academics, and students. On July 13, 2004, the Graduate Tax Program co-sponsored in London a joint conference on “Tax Shelter Reporting: Cross-Border M&A and Transfer Pricing” with the School of Tax Law at Queen Mary, University of London. The outstanding panel of speakers included: Philip Baker, joint head of the School of Tax Law at Queen Mary; Richard Collier, tax partner and leader of PricewaterhouseCooper’s Banking and Capital Markets Tax Practice; Chris Davidson, Assistant Director for Cross Cutting Policy in the Inland Revenue department of the United Kingdom; Lawrence B. Gibbs, former Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service and currently a partner at Miller & Chevalier; Alan W. Granwell, Partner, Ivins, Phillips & Barker Chartered; Ron Haigh, Partner in the London office International Tax Group of Deloitte; Harry J. “Hal” Hicks, Associate Chief Counsel (International) in the Office of Chief Counsel of the Internal Revenue Service; Eric Solomon, Deputy Assistant Secretary (Regulatory Affairs) in the Office of Tax Policy of the U.S. Treasury Department; and David Southern, professorial fellow and joint head of the School of Tax Law at Queen Mary.

On September 30, 2004, the Graduate Tax Program also hosted in Boston a Tax Accounting and Inventories Conference featuring Leslie J. Schneider of Ivins, Phillips and Barker Chartered. This event was co-sponsored by the Tax Executives Institute, Inc.

 

Melchionna

Visiting Scholars

During the 2005/2006 Academic Year, Luca Melchionna will be a Visiting Scholar in residence at Boston University School of Law. Professor Melchionna is currently a partner in the firm, Studio Legale Iannarelli, Mauro & Melchionna, as well as a Professor of International Business Law and International Tax Law at Humanitarian University of Multidisciplinary International Cultures (HUMIC), in Rome, Italy. He is a member of the Editorial Staff of the Rivista di Tributario Internazionale (The International Tax Review). Professor Melchionna received his Laurea in Giurisprudenza, LL.M. in International Trade and Business, and LL.M. in International Tax Law from the University of Rome. In 2004, he received an LL.M. in American Law from Boston University. He is a member of the Italian Bar, Arbiter of the Italian Arbitral Chamber, member of Young International Arbitration Group (YIAG) of the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), and member of the Association of Italian Jazz Musicians. During 2005/2006, he will focus on use of arbitration to resolve tax controversies.
