College of Arts & SciencesCommunication StudiesMinor Concentration in Communication StudiesThe minor concentration in communication studies is designed for students who want a general introduction to the theories and practical applications of mass communication. This minor concentration is restricted to College of Arts & Sciences, College of Fine Arts, and College of Engineering students. Prerequisites for entering the program are a minimum grade of B in CAS EN 201 Intermediate Composition; CAS WR 150 Writing and Research Seminar; or CAS EN 220 Proseminar in Literature; and a grade of B in COM CO 201 Introduction to Communication Writing. The minor concentration should be declared before the end of the second semester of the sophomore year to ensure sufficient time to complete the requirements. Required CoursesThe following three courses are required for the minor concentration: COM CM 321 Mass Communication Research COM CM 331 Writing for Communication COM CM 380 Theory and Process of Communication Plus at least four courses from the following: COM CM 303 Organizational Structure and Behavior COM CM 311 Oral Presentations COM CM 409 Persuasion and Public Opinion COM CM 481 Law of Communication COM CM 510 Computers in Communication COM CM 514 New Communication Technologies COM CM 523 Designing Interactive Communication (prereq: COM CM 414 or CM 716 or consent of instructor) COM CM 534 Communication Strategies in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution A grade point average of 2.3 is required in all COM courses. No transfer credit may be used to fulfill the program’s seven-course residence requirement in the College of Communication. Students must register for COM CO 201 at the College of Communication Office of Student Services (COM Room 123), and for all other courses at the corresponding COM department.
