Gabriel Oliveira is a pre-medical student whose passion is providing equitable access to medical care. He has worked for BU Upward Bound Math & Science where he tutored an anatomy course and mentored a cohort of high school students through remote education and the college application process. During his undergraduate studies, Gabriel has worked as a researcher at the BU Neural Systems Laboratory where he has assisted in a project analyzing amygdalar-thalamic emotional pathways. For his senior practicum, Gabriel completed an internship as a clinical researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital’s orthopaedic oncology department where he assisted in a project analyzing the quality of life of pediatric patients with bone sarcomas. As a first-generation student growing up in a minority-majority community, Gabriel has witnessed how language barriers affect medical treatments and diagnosis. A Fulbright experience will provide Gabriel with the unique perspective of what it is like to learn English as a first-time learner while fortifying the communication skills it takes to be an effective and equitable medical professional.
