Flag of Ethiopia

Following the fall of the socialist government in 1991, Ethiopia has undergone major restructuring of its financial institutions. In 1994, the National Bank of Ethiopia was granted authority to license, supervise, and regulate financial institutions. Private financial institutions were allowed to establish themselves in the country. Before 1996, microfinance services were provided through donor funded programs by NGOs and government institutions. In 1996, a regulatory framework for licensing and supervision of MFIs was introduced and most programs became regulated institutions. Since that time, the industry has shown incredible growth in terms of outreach and number of clients. The National Bank of Ethiopia regulates banking, insurance, and microfinance institutions.
