About
the Journal.
The Brownstone Journal is Boston University’s
journal of undergraduate research and scholarship. The Journal
is affiliated with the Undergraduate Research Opportunities
Program (UROP website) and enjoys the sponsorship of the Office
of the Provost as well as the support of many contributing departments
and programs from across the University. The Brownstone is a
peer-reviewed and faculty-advised journal edited and produced
by students. It is published in the spring semester of each
academic year for members of the Boston University campus and
the greater academic community. Scholarly works are invited
from all fields of study—humanities, natural sciences, social
sciences, and math and computer sciences—especially those that
are of an interdisciplinary nature. Scholarly translations and
noted artworks are published on a limited basis.
Independent and rigorous undergraduate scholarship that goes
beyond the requirements of coursework deserves recognition.
The Journal, as a venue for the publication of outstanding student
papers, promotes the effort of student scholars and integrates
their interests into the academic community. The editorial staff
of the Journal is committed to the cultivation of a campus atmosphere
in which undergraduates value their own academic potential and
seek to produce scholarship of a quality consistent with the
highest values of the academy. The showcase which the Journal
provides for the most superior papers each year encourages undergraduates
to think of themselves not just as excellent students, but as
scholars.
The process of publication– research, composition, editing,
revision, and production – is distinctively valuable experience
which will serve student authors well whether they immediately
enter the workplace following commencement or pursue graduate
study. The relationships that authors build with collaborators,
student editors and faculty readers are no less rewarding than
the satisfaction of bringing a paper into print.
