Nutrition 101: Boston City Hospital had a long affiliation with Boston University's School of Medicine prior to its merger with the school's hospital in 1996, which created the single private nonprofit entity now known as Boston Medical Center. By 1912, of 111 physicians on the hospital staff and outpatient department, 93 had received their training at BU. Around that time, the hospital had to cope with a surging number of immigrants -- Middle Eastern, Chinese, Eastern European, Italian, and Irish -- into its neighborhood of brick rowhouses once built for wealthy families and their servants. All needed medical care, with obstetrical and pediatric services particularly in demand, as well as basic education in nutrition and healthy eating. In this photograph from the 1920s, a member of the Boston City Hospital staff presents a lesson in portion control and how to create a balanced meal.
