ENG acoustics expert brings home gold

Michael Howe, ENG professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering, will receive the Per Bruel Gold Medal for Noise Control and Acoustics from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The award, which honors eminent achievement and extraordinary merit in the field, will be presented at the 2000 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, held November 5 through 10 in Orlando, Fla.

Howe was singled out for his work on problems related to the production of sound and vibration by unsteady fluid flow interacting with elastic structures. The ASME, a 125,000-member organization, previously honored him as Rayleigh Lecturer for his pioneering contributions to the science and applications of acoustics. The society characterizes Howe as "one of the most important modern contributors to the fields of aero- and hydroacoustics," noting that his "exceptional understanding of the
underlying physics and his mastery of mathematical methods have shed light on problems in such diverse fields as air and space systems and underwater technology."
