"The most breath-taking sky-view of Boston from this beautiful, glass enclosed roof garden with romantic music and the finest foods. One of the outstanding hotels in Boston, the Shelton is located . . . in the quiet and scenic section of the city." That's the printed copy on the back of this early 1950s postcard we found recently at an antiquarian bookshop. The Shelton -- originally the Sheraton -- was built in 1923 and purchased by the University in 1954 for use as a women's residence hall. The Shelton was an elegant property in its day, even hosting NBC and CBS radio shows from the bandstand of the roof garden. Since then, the clouds in the ceiling have cleared and the roof garden, fundamentally unchanged in 50 years, is used primarily as a student lounge. Contemporary photo (right) by Kalman Zabarsky
