Visitors from Commonwealth Avenue. With the
apparent loss of the Mars Polar Lander this week
and the disappearance of the Mars Climate Orbiter
in September, we were reminded of the rocky
beginning of the U.S. space program in the 1950s.
This picture was taken at the Museum of Science on
February 12, 1958, just a week after the Vanguard
Test Satellite -- we assume the gentleman is
showing off a model of the device -- crashed in a
test launch from Cape Canaveral. Nevertheless, the
three representatives of the BU Women Graduates'
Club, including COM Professor Emerita Carol Hills
(COM'49) in the middle, appear thoroughly
optimistic about the outcome of the space race. The
photo doesn't identify the occasion of their
terrestrial visit. Boston
