University's top student athletes receive
honors
Chris Drury (CAS'98), the 1998 winner of the
Hobey Baker Award as college hockey's outstanding
player, and Rosemary Ryan (SAR'98), a four-time
winner of the America East women's cross country
title, have been named Boston University's
Outstanding Male and Female Athletes of the Year,
respectively.
Four other athletes were also recognized for
their accomplishments: women's tennis player
Michelle Magid (CAS'98) was named top female
student athlete, and runner Karl Rasmussen (COM'98)
was voted top male student athlete. Sharing the
John Simpson award for "enthusiastic senior
leadership" are football cocaptain Randy Smith
(COM'98) and women's soccer cocaptain Maura Mullane
(SED'98).
In addition, Boston University Executive Vice
President Joseph Mercurio received the athletic
department's campus community award.
Drury, the most honored player in the 77-year
history of hockey at BU, is the University's
all-time leading goal scorer, with 113, and the
third all-time leading point producer, with 213.
During the 1997-98 season the Trumbull, Conn.,
native helped lead the Terriers to a 28-8-2 record.
They won the Beanpot Tournament and the Hockey East
regular-season title for the fourth straight year.
Statistically, Drury finished the year leading the
team in goals, 28, points, 57, shorthanded goals,
4, and hat tricks, 2.

Rosemary Ryan
|
Ryan, who was captain of the women's cross
country team this year, won the America East title
and finished 15th at the NCAA Championships. A
native of Limerick, Ireland, she earned All-America
honors, and during the recently completed indoor
track season, won the 5,000-meter run at the
America East Championships. Ryan was also named to
the All-East cross country, indoor, and outdoor
track teams. During the 1997 outdoor track season,
she set the conference record in the 3,000-meter
run and won the New England title in the same
event.
Magid, from Houston, Texas, was a four-year
starter for the women's tennis team. The Dean's
List student, who has a 3.65 grade point average,
compiled a collegiate record of 63-25. She has
posted a 12-0 record in America East tournament
matches. Accepted into the School of Medicine's
MMEDIC program as a sophomore, Magid is a member of
the Golden Key National Honor Society and the
Medical Honor Society, was the distinguished
sophomore in CAS in 1995, won the honors program
writing competition the same year, and was an
American Academy Distinguished Student in 1997. Her
community service includes being a Buddy Volunteer
at Texas Children's Hospital, building affordable
housing with Habitat for Humanity, and
participating in the Oxfam Fast Program. Last
summer she worked at the Jerusalem Hospital, where
she helped care for survivors of a market bomb
attack in that city.

During the 1997 season, Rasmussen won the
league cross country title for the fourth time and
the New England title for the third time. The
native of Haugesund, Norway, also set the league
record in the 5,000-meter run at the 1998 indoor
conference meet with a time of 14:03. Then at the
NCAA Championships, he finished 15th. He has a
grade point average of 3.65. His other
accomplishments include winning the IC4A title in
the 10,000-meter run at the 1996 outdoor meet,
along with the indoor titles at the New England
3,000-meter the same year and the 1995 5,000-meter
run. Rasmussen was also voted the Most Outstanding
Performer at the 1996 America East Championship
meet.
