Athletes of the Week

Matt Smith, Kevin Murphy, and Albie O'Connell

Men's track runners Matt Smith (COM'98) and Kevin Murphy (SED'98) earned All-American honors in the NCAA Championships March 14 and 15 in Indianapolis.

Smith, from Birmingham, England, improved on last year's 12th-place finish by placing 6th in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 7:59, capturing All-American status for the first time.

Murphy, from Norwell, Mass., didn't clear any hurdles -- other than earning All-American accolades for the third time despite coming down with the flu the night before his 800-meter trials. Still, he ran 1:49.11 in the trials and 1:51 in the finals, capturing eighth place.

Hockey forward Albie O'Connell (CAS'99) scored the first hat trick of his college career March 14, enabling the Terriers to beat Merrimack in dramatic fashion, 6-5. The victory tied the Hockey East Quarterfinals at one game apiece, forcing a third game the following night. BU lost the decisive game in the best-of-three series, but the Terriers will earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament because they captured the conference's regular-season crown.

O'Connell, from Watertown, Mass., also had an assist in BU's 4-1 loss to Merrimack on March 13. He has 12 goals and 16 assists this season.
