The U.S. women's hockey team's winning the gold
medal in Nagano, Japan, reminds many fans of the
pride felt in this country 18 years ago when the
U.S. men's hockey team stunned the world by
upsetting the heavily favored Soviet Union team,
and then defeating Finland to gain the gold.
Pictured are four members of the 1980 "Miracle on
Ice" team, Terriers Jim Craig (SED'80), Mike
Eruzione (SED'77), Jack O'Callahan (CAS'79), and
Dave Silk (CAS'80,GSM'93). A few weeks after their
heroics in Lake Placid they received a standing
ovation before a BU game at Walter Brown Arena.
Eruzione, now Boston University's director of
athletics development, scored the winning goal
against the Soviet Union. "We believed in
ourselves," he recalls. "We personified what
teamwork was all about. There wasn't just one
player who enabled us to win, there were 20."
