Athletes of the Week

Kim Kos and Sharon Eifes

Deuces were wild for Boston University athletes during the first weekend of October as six players in three different sports scored twice in one game. Field hockey cocaptains Kim Kos (COM'98) and Sharon Eifes (SAR'98), however, netted three goals each in BU's 8-3 victory over Hofstra October 3.

Scoring two goals were men's soccer forward Nick Bone (SMG'98) in Boston University's 4-1 victory over Drexel October 3, women's soccer forward Mary-Beth Manger (SAR'01) in BU's 6-0 shutout of Drexel October 3, teammate Lauren Garuccio (CGS'01) in the Terriers' 2-1 win over Hofstra October 5, and field hockey players Kos, Candice Lilienfeld (COM'99), and Katherine Cusick (CAS'01) in their 7-0 blanking of Drexel October 5.

The elusive hat trick was accomplished by Kos and Eifes after BU came from behind to tie Hofstra 1-1. Then Eifes took over, scoring on three straight penalty corners in just under six minutes. It was the first three-goal game in her career. Eifes, a back, is known for her solid defense, having earned second team All-America East honors in her sophomore and junior years and anchoring a backfield that finished second in the nation in goals against average (0.72). The native of Collinsville, Conn., scored just one goal last year and one in her previous season.

Kos scored the next three goals to give BU a 7-1 lead. Kos, from Toledo, Ohio, was also the BU Bridge Athlete of the Week for the October 3 issue. She hadn't scored a goal in the first five games of the season, but that changed against Maine on September 24 when she scored the game's only goal. Kos has scored six goals in her last three games. Last season she enjoyed 11 multiple-point games and garnered first team All-America East honors.

The Terriers now sit atop the conference standings with a 3-0 record in America East. BU is 5-4 overall.
