Tonight, playwright alum MJ Halberstadt opens Hardly Soft as part of the Museum of Fine Arts' MFA Late Nites. In the play—which MJ describes as "100% an experiment"—the Placid Purlers knitting group tries to recruit new members and provide brief mini-lessons, but find that their varied strategies for achieving calmness often collide. Audience members encounter characters knitting in the art galleries and are instructed to listen to their conversations and, in some cases, participate. Congratulations! Alumni playwrights MJ Halberstadt and Laura Neill have been selected from among 40 applicants to develop an original Boston-centric play as part of SpeakEasy Stage Company’s The Boston Project. They will join returning Boston Project playwright Phaedra Michelle Scott. The three Boston Project playwrights will each receive a commission and have nine months to write and develop their proposed plays.
The Boston Project is a new works initiative that supports the creation and development of new plays set in Boston, which explore what it means to live in this city at this moment and tap into the full breadth of experiences and identities that make up life in the Hub. Work on each play will build toward a two-week developmental workshop, culminating in invited staged readings in June 2019. Congrats!
