Production History - Faculty & Staff

Founded in 1981 by Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott, Boston Playwrights' Theatre is an award-winning small professional theatre producing under a NEAT contract. Our mission is dedicated to promoting the writing and production of new plays. We are located at 949 Commonwealth Ave., Boston, MA.

Our theatre is also the home of the Graduate Playwriting Program. We are funded by and are part of The Graduate Creative Writing Department in the English Department of Boston University. We are a highly successful writers' training program with award-winning alumni. We hire some of the best professional actors, directors, and designers in New England to bring these new writers' works to life, and we have won many awards over the years, including "Boston's Best" and a 2003 NETC Regional Award for "Outstanding Achievement in the American Theatre".

What We Bring to the Stage

Our Own Productions
Each year we produce two alumni new works in our Season of New Plays, plus we produce a third under the name "Playwrights' Theatre at B.U." in cooperation with the College of Fine Arts Theatre Program. Then in April and May, we produce our First Stages Reading Series - staged readings written by our current year's graduate students. From the workshop stages to the productions, we employ some of the best and brightest of New England's professional actors and directors to help us bring these new works alive.

A Venue for Other Theatre Companies
When we at BPT are not producing shows, we continue our mission of supporting new works by donating our theater space to host other New England theatre companies who are producing new plays. See our Past Productions for more information.

The Boston Theater Marathon
Fifty (50) local theatre companies join us for the annual Boston Theater Marathon, a showcase of new 10-minute plays by New England writers chosen yearly from over 300 entries! Each play is produced by a different theatre company.
