The Roots of Our BU Family

A senior looks ahead to life as an alumna

| From Alumni Notes | By Suzie Wyman (COM’13)

As I begin my senior year, I am experiencing an assortment of emotions, and I wonder what it will mean to be a BU alumna.

I have learned about the strong support that the BU alumni community provides through alumni panels at my school, through the Career Advisory Network, and from the personal stories of recent graduates. As an advertising major in the College of Communication, I have come to understand the importance of making connections. So, who is behind the success and strength of this new network I am about to join?

I discovered that the widespread family of BU alumni stays tightly connected thanks to the work of a group of 35 devoted individuals who make up the Boston University Alumni Council (BUAC). Representing classes from 1959 to 2009, they are leaders in their professions and their communities. They serve as advocates for BU alumni and as ambassadors of the University and the Alumni Association.

“The mission of the Alumni Council is to serve and engage the ever-growing BU family,” says Shadi Daher (SDM’90,’94), BUAC president. “We are honored to be the voice of University leadership, and as president, I am privileged to steer our efforts in ways that positively impact alumni worldwide.”

Through the Global Day of Service, which involves more than 4,000 alumni and students annually around the world, to the Career Advisory Network to professional panels and affinity networks and social media conversations, the Boston University Alumni Council actively engages alumni and encourages advocacy and philanthropic support to ensure that today’s BU students—and tomorrow’s—continue a tradition of excellence. The BUAC has created an Alumni Association that I can see myself being a part of.

I look forward to crossing the stage and receiving my diploma, and I will be honored to join a powerful network of leaders, achievers, and innovators. No matter how far from campus I may end up, I will feel confident that those connections will be available to me and to graduates for generations to come.
