The costume shop at Boston University is like a small business supporting multiple theaters. At any given moment, the crew there might be working on the costumes for three or four different shows at once. The latest costume designs coming to life are for Tony Kushner’s two-part Angels in America from the College of Fine Arts School of Theatre at BU’s Booth Theatre.
Chloe Moore (CFA’20) calls the costume design process “controlled chaos,” and says the designers must be cooperative and creative, because not only are they taking each other’s feedback, but they are hearing feedback from the directors and actors, as well. The biggest challenge for Angels, she said, was designing the actual angel’s costume: “We’ve really worked together so that she can appear as if she’s one with the set, and very otherworldly at the same time.”
