For the first time since 2009, the Beanpot trophy is returning to Terrier Nation.

Charlestown native and Boston Bruins draft pick Matt Grzelcyk (COM’16) ripped a wrist shot from the top of the left face-off circle just 51 seconds into the overtime period Monday night at TD Garden to sweep the BU men’s ice hockey team to a 4-3 win over the Northeastern Huskies in the Beanpot Tournament final. The victory marked a record 30th Beanpot title for the Terriers since the tournament began in 1952, a tally unmatched by any of the tournament’s three other schools. The win also was the first Beanpot victory as BU coach for David Quinn (CAS’89), who took over as head coach two seasons ago.

Grzelcyk’s winning goal was his seventh of the season and second of the game. The two goals earned the team captain Beanpot MVP honors.

Evan Rodrigues (SMG’15) and Jack Eichel (CGS’16) recorded assists on the game-winning tally, giving Eichel 50 points on the season, the first Terrier freshman to reach that milestone since Tony Amonte (CAS’93) in 1990.

This year’s Beanpot championship game, postponed from February 9 by one of Boston’s ubiquitous 2015 blizzards, was a nail-biter down to the final second. The Terriers scored their first goal of the evening in the first period when Mike Moran (COM’16) notched a wrist shot past Northeastern goaltender Clay Witt, for his fourth goal of the season. The Huskies immediately retaliated with a goal from John Stevens, which silenced Terrier fans momentarily. But Robbie Baillargeon (CGS’15) and Grzelcyk scored goals in the second period, giving the team a 3-1 lead heading into the third period. Baillargeon, who had only one goal this season coming into the game, capitalized on a rebound from a Cason Hohmann (SMG’15) shot to put BU up 2-1 early in the second period. Grzelcyk secured the insurance marker for the Terriers with his sixth goal of the year when he blasted a slap shot from the top of the face-off circle to push BU ahead 3-1 late in the second frame.

The Terriers could not hold the edge, however, as Northeastern tied the score with 9:07 remaining in the third period off goals by Kevin Roy and Dustin Darou. The game went into overtime, but the Terriers, who won a double OT marathon against Harvard in the Beanpot semifinal February 3, wasted no time in clinching the coveted title, finishing off the Huskies less than a minute into the overtime period.

The win gives the Terriers much-needed momentum heading into the final weekend of the regular season. The team can wrap up the number-one overall seed in the Hockey East conference with a victory this weekend in one of two contests against Northeastern, one on February 27 and one on February 28.

This was the first time since 2012, when Boston College defeated the Terriers 3-2, that a Beanpot final has been decided in overtime.

The Huskies’ loss extended their Beanpot drought to 27 years. They last won the tournament in 1988.

The Beanpot consolation game, played at 4:30 p.m., saw the Boston College Eagles besting the Harvard Crimson 3-2.

The Terriers return to action against the Huskies this Friday, February 27, at 7:30 p.m. at Agganis Arena and again on Saturday, February 28, at 8 p.m. at Northeastern in the final games of the regular season. The Hockey East Tournament begins the first weekend of March.
