Abstract:
Since the influx of anti-retroviral drugs into Sub-Saharan Africa there has been a significant rise in the prevalence of drug-resistant HIV. Strict adherence to prescribed HIV medications is paramount in preventing the development of drug resistance and reliable genotyping techniques are required to identify drug resistance in cases on non-adherence. Currently, there exists no direct way to measure an HIV patient’s adherence to a prescribed drug regimen and genotyping can only be done by sending samples to better equipped labs. This results in higher costs, longer turnaround times, and poor patient outcomes. Our lab has developed methods to detect the presence of anti-retroviral drugs in urine samples that will allow clinicians to better monitor their patients’ adherence habits. It is the goal of this work to develop lateral flow assays that monitor drug adherence and identify the development of drug resistance.
