The Intersection of Biology and Chemistry

What is Biochemistry and Molecular Biology?

The study of life essentially reduces down to the study of chemical processes. The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) major trains you in the experimental techniques used to probe the structures and functions of biologically important molecules. BMB’s strong laboratory and research focus prepares you for graduate study or to enter careers in high-growth areas such as biotechnology and biomedical research.

Undergraduate Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate mastery of both fundamental and advanced concepts in Biology and Chemistry, with a strong focus on the molecular biological and biochemical components of these disciplines.
  • Demonstrate expertise in the scientific method, specifically the ability to apply the scientific method—which includes the critical assessment of the scientific literature, analyze data, and use modeling and simulation in their understanding and communication of the BMB disciplines
  • Attain the technical and/or analytical skills required for employment or post-graduate education in BMB or BMB-related careers, including professional careers and science education.

Interested in Medicine?

The BMB major satisfies all premedical requirements. Please visit the Premedical/Prehealth Advising website for additional information.
